Dyke Lane House, a historic gem in Poynings, was built in the mid-17th century during the reign of Charles I, the Cromwell period, or Charles II. In 1807, it became a grocery and drapery shop under the ownership of Abraham and Martha Graimes. After their deaths, their daughter Mary and her husband James Burchell managed the shop until it was sold in 1840.

In the mid-1800s, a Victorian extension was added, shaping much of the house as it stands today. By the early 20th century, the Hollingdale family occupied the house. Vera Hollingdale ran a shop known as “Auntie’s,” with a tea garden popular during WWII as a meeting place where soldiers were offered free tea. Visitors to Devils Dyke descended to Poynings via the Funicular Railway and had tea before returning to Brighton on the bus.

In 1948, Maisie Osborne purchased the house for £1,050. After changing hands several times, Sue and Mike Morgan acquired it in 2014, transforming it into The South Downs Way Bed and Breakfast in 2015
